Feature:

Stable complex of ferric iron and maltose (3-hydroxy?2-methyl?4-pyrone).

Pharmacological action:

Stimulates erythropoiesis. Iron is involved in the synthesis of hemoglobin, myoglobin, cytochrome, catalase and peroxidase, folic acid in the synthesis of amino acids, nucleic acids, purines and pyrimidines, in the metabolism of choline contributes to normal maturation of megaloblasts and normoblasts.

Pharmacokinetics:

After absorption in the digestive tract iron is associated with transferrinom plasma and is either included in the synthetic reaction, or deposited in the tissues as ferritin. Release of iron occurs in the feces, urine and sweat. Folic acid is mainly absorbed in the upper intestine (the duodenum) and 64% is bound to proteins. It is metabolized in the liver excreted mainly by the kidneys and partially the intestines. T1/2 — h 22,4

Drug interactions:

Antacids and tetracycline antibiotics reduce the absorption.

Overdose:

Symptoms: the increasing incidence of side effects.

Treatment: if you suspect an overdose — definition of serum iron and serum ferritin levels. With a significant excess of the normal indicators of need the purpose of the iron chelator is deferoxamine.

Precautions:

At the beginning of treatment it is necessary to investigate the level of serum iron and ferritin in serum. Treatment is carried out to normalize the blood picture (hemoglobin and serum ferritin).

Special instructions:

Possible staining stool in a dark color.
