The medication has a long history of its use for treatment by healthcare systems within the frames of public initiatives to decrease the level of drug poisoning and mortality associated with opioid overdose. The preparation is recommended for patients with substance use disorders. The medicine is prescribed during acute opioid overdose to curb undesirable conditions caused by it, for instance, extreme drowsiness, loss of consciousness and slowed breathing.

The medication comes as a solution for injections in 0.4 mg/ml 1ml ampoules. The pack contains 10 ampoules.
There is no consensus among medical specialists concerning the optimal starting dose and route of administration. For instance, the American Heart Administration advises intranasal administering of 2 mg. Alternatively 0.4 mg intramuscularly can be injected. In order to diagnose opioid dependence, 0.8 mg of Naloxone is administered intravenously and the patients condition is monitored in order to identify signs of withdrawal syndrome. The choice of the optimal dose is decided upon by different types and doses of opioids causing toxicity.
