TABEX® (Cytisine, Desmoxan, Baptitoxine, Sophorine) is an alkaloid isolated from Cytisus laburnum (broom) plants. The mechanism of action is similar to nicotine. It activates the nicotinic receptors of vegetative ganglia, irritates the chemoreceptors of the carotid sinus and causes adrenaline release from the adrenals. When smoking and at the same time taking Tabex, the effects of nicotine are multiplied, which leads to the appearance of unpleasant symptoms of a nicotine overdose. This causes the patient to gradually give up smoking, without experiencing symptoms of withdrawal. The action of nicotine is replaced by the action of cytisine. Tabex was first developed and marketed in Bulgaria in 1964.

DESCRIPTION
Quitting smoking is difficult. Physical dependence on smoking, or nicotinism, forms a withdrawal syndrome, in which a chronic smoker, when giving up worsens the general state, mood and thinking processes. The degree of severity of abstinence syndrome that occurs when withdrawal of nicotine intake into the body is reduced. In this case, it is highly advisable to use specific therapy. For this purpose, a number of products have been developed and one of them is called TABEX. The active substance of the drug is a cytisine - the chemical formula of which determines its nicotinic activity. Cytisine binds to H-holinoretseptorami, that is, it enters into a relationship of competitive antagonism with nicotine. The advantage of TABEX is that a person who wants to get rid of the addictive habit, but does not have the willpower to immediately stop smoking, can do so gradually, reducing the number of cigarettes smoked. Not later than the 5th day after the beginning of treatment, smoking should be stopped.
The effectiveness of TABEX was confirmed by the results of clinical studies. S. Stoyanov and M. Yanachkova (1972) conducted research among 70 volunteers with a long history of smoking. Of these, 57.6% after treatment stopped smoking, in 31.4% of cases a partial positive result was obtained - a decrease in the number of cigarettes smoked from 20-30 to 3-4 per day. A negative result was obtained in 11% of cases, which is due to premature and unreasonable refusal of the course of treatment - before the end of 3 days, that is, the period necessary for saturation of the body with cytisine.
